That is the short, blunt head with pronounced ridges over the eyes looking just like horns. It is obvious the horn shark got its common name from the appearance of its head. Swell sharks are BIOFLUORESCENT and can absorb sunlight temporarily and then re-emit it as a green glow! When letting the water out, the shark makes a dog-like bark! Look closely in the hiding spots in this display to see if you can find these guys. This behavior makes it difficult for a predator to bite or pull a swell shark from its rocky crevice. It bends its body into a U shape, grasps its caudal fin in its mouth and swallows a large quantity of sea water, which makes it swell to twice its normal size.

When threatened, the swell shark has an unusual response. They are able to easily dine on spiny sea urchins, crabs, mussels and clams! Since these fish live in the rocky regions of the ocean reef, they are able to squeeze their bodies down so that they can enter small crevices. Wolf eels have big fleshy lips, strong jaws and sharp teeth for crushing their prey. Wolf eels are really not considered an eel, they are actually very long fish with gill slits and pectoral fins. The appearance of the fish is apparently scary, with its rugged tone, large eyes, and toothy mouth, helping them scare off many predators.

Their large head and large mouth have teeth and jaws. Neither a wolf nor eel, this guy may look a bit ferocious but he’s actually quite harmless if you keep your fingers away from its powerful jaw. With a size up to 8 long, these often shy fish are found typically in dens in and around rocky reefs.
